Getting outdoors is incredibly healthy, and studies have reported the multiple benefits of visiting green spaces, parks and woodlands. However, getting to such places can be difficult for those with mobility issues, and public transport rarely provides access.
All-Terrain Mobility Scooters are designed for off-road and off-pavement travel, allowing you to easily visit country parks, woodlands and explore the great outdoors - they are also fully road-legal too. Most off-road scooters can easily handle well managed parkland and some are even capable of driving along bridleways and more challenging terrain. Here we run through our off-road mobility scooters, and explain their features, strengths and weaknesses.
We have six large all-terrain scooters, of which four are most suitable for off-road adventures: Corvus Rapide, Abilize Ranger, Adventurer X8 Mobility Scooter and the Aviator. The other two scooters are the Kondor, a heavier scooter with a canopy, and the TriGlide Cruiser, which is a three-wheel scooter more suited to roads and pavements.
What makes these all-terrain?
The three key features that make a mobility scooter an all-terrain one are the size of the wheels, the size of the batteries, and power of the motor.
Larger wheels can handle rougher terrain better, and also give the scooter more ground clearance, allowing it to more easily navigate over obstacles such as roots, puddles and bumps.
A more powerful motor means it is less likely to get stuck, as the motor has the power required to lift the scooter and the rider. These can handle gravel paths and rough terrain allowing you to get off the beaten track and explore the countryside.
A larger battery is needed to keep the motor running, as off-road riding will run a battery down much faster than driving on a smoother road or pavement.
Aviator
With just a 700 Watt motor, the Aviator is the least powerful of our more rugged mobility scooters, but still a great performer. Its two 75Ah batteries power it up to 30 miles, and the 13” alloy wheels provide an impressive 5 inch ground clearance, allowing it to ride over bumps, branches and dips without too much trouble.
Overall, it's a good mobility scooter for rough terrain which also performs well on roads and pavements.
Corvus Rapide
The Corvus mobility scooter uses the same 75Ah batteries as the Aviator, also giving it 30 miles of travel on a full charge. It has smaller wheels and sits lower to the ground, with 13" wheels and a ground clearance of 3.5", so it is more suited for well managed parkland and woodland trails.
The more powerful 850 Watt motor means it performs better on inclines.
Abilize Ranger
While the Ranger scooter also utilises twin 75Ah batteries and 31 mile range, it has larger wheels and a more powerful motor.
The 15” wheels are also wider than standard scooters, giving it more grip and control, and it comes with a 900 Watt motor that eats up paths and tracks. The Ranger is a Which? best buy product.
Adventurer X8 Mobility Scooter
For the ultimate electric powered off-road mobility scooter, meet our heavy-duty mobility scooter, the Adventurer X8 all-terrain scooter.
It has a 100Ah battery to ensure the heavier frame also manages up to 32 miles on a full charge. It boasts the biggest wheels, with 16” pneumatic tyres, giving it a 5 inch ground clearance, and the 1300w motor means it can power through all sorts of obstacles.
Unlike some other all-terrain mobility scooters, all of ours can also be driven on the road, as they are Class 3 road legal scooters, so you get the best of all scooters. You can use these to visit the shops, go to the park or explore the local woodland walks. Get out and about, experience some nature and fresh air, and give yourself a boost!
