Lithium mobility scooter FAQs

  • Are lithium scooters actually that much lighter?

    The difference is more significant than most people expect. The battery alone accounts for a large part of a scooter's total weight, and lithium batteries weigh considerably less than lead-acid ones of the same capacity. On some models the total weight drops by 5kg or more. If you're lifting a scooter into a car boot on your own, that gap is very noticeable.   • How long do lithium scooter batteries last?

    Two to four years is typical with regular use and sensible charging habits. Lead-acid batteries tend to need replacing after 12 to 18 months. Lithium costs more upfront but usually works out cheaper over the life of the scooter.

  • Can I take a lithium scooter on a plane?

    Many lithium scooters are airline-friendly, which is one of the main reasons people choose them. Batteries under 300Wh are generally accepted when declared in advance, though airlines set their own rules and some are stricter than others.   • Can I charge a lithium battery off the scooter?

    Most lithium scooter batteries can be removed and charged separately indoors, which is handy if you store the scooter outside or in a shed. Check the product page for your specific model as it varies.

  • Are lithium scooters available with VAT relief?

    Yes, absolutely. The same VAT relief rules apply here as they do with any other mobility scooter. If you are purchasing the scooter to help manage a qualifying long-term illness or disability, you won't have to pay any VAT.
