CareCo is not part of the Motability scheme. However, we strive to provide the best quality and most affordable mobility scooters in the UK. We have all types of scooter, from the standard pavement scooter and larger road legal scooters, to compact folding scooters and travel scooters that you can put in your car boot and take on holiday with you.

What is the UK Motability scheme?

The UK Motability scheme is a government-backed initiative designed to help people with disabilities gain access to mobility aids and vehicles, enhancing their independence and quality of life. The scheme primarily focuses on providing financial assistance for leasing or purchasing vehicles, including cars, powered wheelchairs, and scooters. Here's how the Motability scheme works and its relevance to purchasing mobility scooters:

  1. Eligibility: To be eligible for the Motability scheme, you need to receive certain disability-related benefits, such as the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA), the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement.

  2. Vehicle Options: The scheme offers participants the choice of leasing a vehicle or a mobility aid for a fixed period, usually three years. This includes options like adapted cars, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs), and powered wheelchairs or scooters.

  3. Payments: The cost of the leased vehicle or aid is covered through your mobility allowance. The monthly payments are deducted from your benefit payments and directed to the Motability scheme. This payment covers not only the cost of the vehicle but also insurance, servicing, maintenance, breakdown assistance, and any necessary adaptations.

  4. Adaptations: If you require adaptations to the vehicle or mobility aid to suit your specific needs, the scheme offers a wide range of options. These can include modifications to controls, seating, access, and storage, ensuring the vehicle or aid is tailored to your requirements.

  5. End of Lease Options: At the end of the lease period, you can choose to exchange the vehicle or aid for a new one, using your remaining mobility allowance. Alternatively, you can return the vehicle or aid and exit the scheme.

While the Motability scheme provides an convenient way to access mobility aids and vehicles, it's essential to consider your individual needs and preferences before making a decision. There are many excellent scooters available direct from retailers such as CareCo that are not available through Motability. The drawbacks of using Motability include:

  1. Limited Choice of Mobility Scooters: You may not be able to get the latest folding lithium-ion scooter

  2. Increased Administrative Workload: More paperwork for you to complete

  3. Longer Sales Cycles: You may have to wait longer for your scooter
