Commodes and Commode Pans

A commode is a freestanding chair with a toilet pan underneath, giving you a safe alternative to the bathroom when getting there quickly or safely is a challenge. They are widely used at night, during recovery from surgery, and anywhere a conventional toilet is too far away. Browse our toilet aids and portable urinals alongside these.

About Our Commodes

Our CareCo commode range covers several different types to suit different needs and settings. Lightweight folding models like the Stowaway pack down and move around the home with minimal effort, making them easy to position wherever they are needed. At the other end of the range, the Exmouth Luxury Commode requires no assembly and is designed to blend into a living room rather than look like medical equipment. As we say in our guide to getting older, stylish commodes that look like normal armchairs are more common than people realise, which matters when something needs to live in a living room or bedroom full time.

Commode FAQs

  • What types of commode are available?

The main types are folding commodes, wheeled commodes, height-adjustable commodes and comfort commodes designed to look like a regular armchair. Folding models are the most portable and easy to store. Wheeled versions can be pushed to the toilet and used as a toilet frame over the pan. Comfort commodes are the most discreet and suit anyone who needs one in a living space rather than a bathroom.

  • Can a commode be used over a toilet?

Some models are designed specifically for this, effectively doubling as a toilet frame with armrests when the pan is removed. This is worth considering if you need support getting on and off the toilet as well as a bedside alternative at night.

  • How do I keep a commode hygienic?

Empty and rinse the pan after each use. Wipe the frame and seat with an antibacterial cleaner regularly. Most pans are removable and straightforward to clean. Commode liners are a practical addition if you want to make disposal quicker and reduce cleaning time.

  • Are commodes available with VAT relief?

VAT relief is available on most medical and daily living aids, which includes commodes and commode pans. If you have a qualifying long-term illness or disability, you can purchase your commode completely free of VAT. Our team will automatically sort out the simple declaration form for you when you place your order. Read our VAT relief explained guide.
