About Our Fixed and Folding Shower Seats

Wall-mounted fold-down seats are a good solution for smaller bathrooms or shared showers, as they fold flat against the wall when not in use and take up no floor space. Natasha, our occupational therapist, recommends the wall-mounted drop-down seat as a frequent first choice, but notes it is only possible if you have a solid wall or can fix directly into timber studwork. Plasterboard alone will not hold it safely.

Before buying, check that your shower tray and floor space can accommodate a seat safely, that the cubicle opening is wide enough to get the seat through, and that there is enough room left to stand comfortably once it is in place.   • Should I get a wall-mounted fold-down seat or a freestanding shower stool?

    It depends on your shower space and whether you share it. A wall-mounted seat folds out of the way completely, which is ideal for smaller showers or if others use the same shower without needing a seat. A freestanding stool requires no installation but takes up floor space and needs to be moved in and out. For a permanent solution in your own shower, wall-mounted is usually the cleaner option. For flexibility or travel, a freestanding model is more practical.

  • Can a shower seat be fitted to an existing shower?

    In most cases, yes. Wall-mounted seats need to be fixed to a solid surface, either a tiled solid wall or directly into timber studwork, not plasterboard. If you are not sure what your walls are made of, it is worth checking before buying. Freestanding models require no fixings at all and can be placed in any shower with enough floor space.

  • How do I know if my shower is suitable for a seat?

    Three things to check: whether the shower tray is strong enough to take a seat with someone sitting on it, whether the door or opening is wide enough to get the seat through, and whether there is enough floor space left once the seat is in position to stand and move safely.   • Are shower seats safe for heavier users?

    Yes, provided you choose the right model and check the weight limit before buying. The Wall Mounted Shower Chair supports up to 25 stone.   • Can I take a shower seat when I travel?

    A freestanding or folding stool is the most practical option for travel, as it requires no installation and packs down compactly. Hotels and holiday rentals rarely have adapted showers, so bringing your own seat is a sensible precaution. Lightweight aluminium models are the easiest to transport.

  • How do I keep a shower seat clean?

    Wipe it down after each use and allow it to dry. Most models have drainage holes in the seat to prevent water pooling. Aluminium frames will not rust, but check any plastic fittings and rubber feet periodically and replace them if they show signs of wear.
