Crutches

Crutches can be a great option when you need a bit more support and stability, whether it’s due to injury or surgery recovery, disability, or ongoing reduced mobility. With crutches, you can reduce the amount of weight you put on a leg, knee, or ankle, allowing you to recover more efficiently or move with more ease.

About Our Crutches

Everyone’s mobility needs are different, so we carry several styles of crutch to help you find the right ones to suit you.

Elbow Crutches are a common style - they’re the type of crutches you’re likely to have seen people using when recovering from an injury. It’s a classic style for a reason - the elbow cuff keeps them secure, and they’re easily adjustable to make them suitable for your height.

Open-Cuff crutches can be helpful if you’re at risk of falling. As they’re not attached to you, they will fall away from you when dropped meaning you’re less likely to trip over them. Underarm crutches, such as our ComfyCrutch, are another option to consider.

Regardless of which type of crutch you choose, it’s important to get the fit right. In her guide to correctly using walking sticks, canes, and crutches, our Occupational Therapist, Natasha, says, “Underarm crutches should have the hand grip at the height of your wrist bone, like a cane. This is the same for vertically cuffed crutches. For cuffed forearm crutches – where your arms sit at right angles – it can be trickier to find the right height. They should be set so your shoulders are not hunched but so you can still push off firmly.”

Crutches FAQs

  • What’s the best way to walk with crutches?

  • Which type of crutches should I choose?

The type of crutches which will be best for you depends on your injury or level of mobility, and your ability to bear weight on your legs as well as your hands and wrists. Consulting an occupational therapist for a recommendation is a great place to start. Once you’ve narrowed down your needs with a professional, our friendly team can advise on specific products - they’re here to help 7 days a week.
