If you find yourself struggling to get out of your favourite armchair, it might be time to consider raising its height, or finding a more suitable chair.

Staying independent starts with something simple: sitting back and getting up without pain or assistance. When you control seat height and support, you’re protecting your joints, conserving energy, and getting yourself as comfortable as possible.

Here, we’ll break down the best advice for keeping comfortable and well-supported using adjustable chairs and some clever accessories that match your needs.

Finding your ideal seat height

When buying a new chair we almost always go with style first. Being able to sit comfortably for hours on end is essential. While style often takes precedence, your ability to sit comfortably for hours on end is essential.

An important measurement is the height of your inside knee to the floor, as this will determine how comfortable your thighs, legs and feet are when sitting. To do this, just measure the distance from the floor to the crease behind your knee while wearing your everyday footwear.

To achieve this, aim for a seat height that matches (or sits just an inch higher) so your feet rest flat and you stand without rocking forward. We provide seat heights on all our chairs and seats, but if you are in any doubt, just give us a call.

The benefits of an adjustable height perching stool

Household chores, cooking, washing, doing your hair, all demand awkward bending and prolonged standing. The Versa adjustable perching stool reduces fatigue by allowing you to “half-sit” while you prepare meals, iron clothes, or brush your teeth.

You can adjust the legs so the seat meets the back of your thighs when you stand. Its gentle forward tilt keeps your hips higher than your knees, which reduces pressure on lower-back discs and improves circulation in your legs. Natasha, our occupational therapist, loves the perching stool - you can read more of what she has to say about it here: Choosing The Right Bathroom Seat - Advice from an OT.

A supportive armchair anchors your living space and gives you a reliable spot to recharge. The Eden high-back chair helps you sit tall and rise smoothly.

Its height-adjustable legs let you fine-tune the seat to match your requirements, while the Eden’s high back softly cushions your spine and neck.

Elevate existing furniture with raisers

Sometimes you might enjoy a sofa or bed that sits a little too low to the floor. You don’t need to go out and buy new furniture, there are plenty of ways to fix the problem!

The best way to solve it is by looking at furniture raisers. They offer a simple and cheap way to raise any chair:

  • Blend raisers into traditional décor - The wooden furniture raisers come with sturdy hardwood blocks with discreet recesses that cradle furniture legs. Slide them into place, test stability with gentle rocking, and mark the new height in your notepad.

  • Modernise support for varied leg shapes - The mobilis furniture raisers use strong plastic collars that grip round, square, or splayed legs. Their neutral finish suits contemporary rooms and wipes clean in seconds.

  • Customise height in exact increments - The stackable adjustable furniture raisers allow you to add or remove rings until you reach the perfect level. Keep spare rings in a labelled bag so you can adapt quickly if a visiting friend needs a lower seat.

Always position raisers under all four legs, test with your full body weight, and re-check weekly for movement – particularly on carpets that compress over time.

Maintain your seating for long-term confidence

Inspect all adjustable legs and raisers monthly. Make sure you tighten screws, vacuum dust from adjustment holes, and wipe surfaces with a damp cloth. Replace worn rubber ferrules on chair legs – an inexpensive part that prevents skidding.

Maintaining your seating doesn't just save you money, it also keeps you safe!

You deserve furniture that works with your body, not against it. Measure thoughtfully, adjust deliberately, and review regularly.

Whether you settle into the Eden High Back Chair, perch on the Versa stool, or lift your trusty sofa with raisers, you’ll minimise strain, reduce fall risk, and preserve the freedom you cherish.

Treat these adjustments as investments in yourself – and enjoy the confidence that comes from a home tailored precisely to your needs.
